ITU assigned country code +993, likely sometime in 1996. This is to replaces country code +7 (former USSR territory). Stentor (Canada) announced tariffs specially for Turkmenistan to take effect from 29 November 1996. Official start date was reported to be 3 January 1997, with use of the new country code mandatory from 3 April 1997.
