The subscriber number was prepended with '4', '5' or '6' depending on the area code and existing subscriber number. There was no permissive dialling of the old format, but a recorded announcement was provided in case of attempts to use the old numbering.
In Kathmandu area +977 1, '4' was prepended to most existing 6-digit subscriber numbers, except 5xxxxx range which was prepended by '5', and 6xxxxx which was prepended by '6'.
Outside Kathmandu, most subscriber numbers were prepended with '5'.
As exceptions to prepending with '5', old subscriber numbers in the following areas were prepended with '4' (noting that some surrounding places not listed here may also require the same changes):
