Numbering range information

December 2006 - updated number ranges

Incumbent carrier TCC generally remains with a 5-digit numbering format, while new carriers such as Tonfon use a 7-digit format.

However, TCC has introduced a 7-digit series of numbers for prepaid service numbers as of 1 January 2006: +676 777xxxx serving the capital Nuku'alofa.

September 2002 - 7-digit national numbering announced

Tonga Department of Communications announced September 2002 that the nation would convert existing 5-digit national subscriber numbers to a 7-digit format by August 2003.

However, as of April 2005, most Tonga number ranges found remain at 5-digit national numbers, with only some wireless numbers using 7-digit format (see below). There was no information available regarding any future schedule for numbering expansion.

31 July 2002 - new Tonfon GSM carrier - 7-digit numbers

Tonfon (Shoreline Communications) commenced its GSM 900 operations on 31 July 2002 under a 7-digit numbering format:
