Area code information

4 September 2010 - unified national mobile numbering zone

Geographic distinctions within the mobile numbers were eliminated in favour of a portable, national numbering range. The previous 1- or 2-digit area code was eliminated, leaving only a standard 9-digit subscriber number to call, of form +51 9xxxxxxxx. Area codes are eliminated for all calls to mobile numbers within Peru and for calling Peru mobile numbers from other nations.

Calls to fixed/wireline numbers were not affected by this change.

* - the expanded mobile number added the area code after the leading '9' of the mobile subscriber number except for the places marked by asterisk (*).

Previously, mobile subscriber numbers were 7 digits, except Lima and Callo which were 8 digits.

Within Peru, calls to mobile numbers are dialled as '0' + area code + new mobile subscriber number.

1 March 2003 - new area codes

Most area codes in Peru changed on 1 March 2003, providing an area code for each department (national district).

Also on that date, '9' was prepended to existing cellular/mobile numbers. Mobile subscriber numbers are now 8 digits in Lima (+51 1 9xxxxxxx) and 7 digits elsewhere (+51 aa 9xxxxxx).

No permissive calling period was reported for these changes.

The new area code assignments take effect as follows:
