Numbering range information

16 September 2005 - expansion to 8-digit national numbering

2 digits were prepended to the previous 6-digit subscriber number to form the new national 8-digit number.

Use of a permissive or parallel dialling period was unknown. Due to conflicting starting digits between the old and new formats, the numbering was likely changed in a splash cut without permissive period.

New numbering plan is based on the following national ranges (as would be dialled domestically):

Format Service/Number Type
------ -------------------
0x(x) prefix/carrier codes
1xx short codes
2xxxxxxx geographic-based fixed/wireline
3xxxxxxx reserved for future use
4xxxxxxx reserved for future use
5xxxxxxx reserved for future use
6xxxxxxx reserved for future use
7xxx short codes for information/premium calls
8xxxxxxx value added/freephone services
800xxxxx reserved (future freephone service?)
801xxxxx internet
807xxxxx information/videotext
81xxxxxx value-added/freephone
85xxxxxx service providers/virtual operators
9xxxxxxx mobile/wireless

Note 1: this particular Nàsuba number changed to 4-digit short code, presumably accessible from within Burundi only.

Note 2: this special service number was an exception to the general number range in which the number was formerly contained.

Short codes and special services

Short codes were expanded from 1x to 1xx format, with potential for expansion to 4-digit format (1xxx).

The following new short code formats took effect:

10x(x) reserved for future use
11x emergency
12x OPT operator
16x social services
Change from old to new short codes:

Old code New code Service
-------- -------- -------
10 120 international semi-automatic
12 122 enquiries
13 123 complaints
14 124 Actel
15 125 long distance semi-automatic (domestic)
16 160 juvenile squad
17 117 police
18 118 fire
New short codes for information and premium services begin with '7' and were standardised at 4-digit length. These can be toll-free or chargeable to the caller as follows:

70xx charges apply
71xx charges apply
72xx charges apply
73xx free
74xx free
75xx free
Notable changes from an old information/premium number to the new 7xxx short code format:
