|ma| Morocco +212

Number Format

Area Code: 1 (formerly 1-2 digits)
Subscriber Number: 7 digits (formerly 4-6 digits)
Trunk Prefix: 0 (required for all calls)
International Prefix: 00
Note: Closed dialling scheme now in effect, where all calls are dialled as 0xxxxxxxx, the digit after the 0 determines the service type (considered the area code portion of the number). The digit(s) following the area code determines location, carrier and/or specific service type.

Area code information

7 March 2009 - national renumbering, extra digit

An extra digit was added to area codes in Morocco, forming 10-digit national numbers (excluding trunk prefixes and country code).

For numbers in +212 2 and +212 3, the digit '5' was prepended to the area code: now +212 52 and +212 53 respectively.

Numbers in +212 8 and +212 9 became +212 80 and +212 89 respectively.

For other ranges, digit '6' was prepended to the area code.

Domestic calls now include the extra digit after the trunk prefix '0'. For example numbers previously dialled as 03 xxxxxxx are now dialled as 053 xxxxxxx.

27 January 2005: updated numbering plan announced

Morocco national telecom regulator ANRT announced the current state of its telephone numbering plan.

Area code plus subscriber number, excluding prefixes, should total 8 digits.

Short codes: 15 fire, 19 police, 1xx other services.

Closed dialling format is in effect, with 0 trunk prefix and full area code/subscriber number to be dialled on all normal domestic calls, whether local or long distance.

Globalstar North Africa mobile service was announced for range +212 92 0xxxxx through +212 92 2xxxxx.

Details: see ANRT announcement (27 January 2005, via ITU).

13 October 2000 - national numbering length expands from 7 to 8 digits

An extra digit will be prepended to Morocco's existing 7-digit national numbers effective 13 October 2000 11pm UTC/GMT. This will be a splash cut, with no permissive transition period from the old numbering. Dialing the old number after the change was to result in a recorded advisory message.

The prefix digit is determined by the number's location or service:

Area/Service Digit
---------------------------
Casablanca, Settat 2
Rabat, Tanger, Tetouan 3
Agadir, Marrakech 4
Fes, Meknes, Oujda 5
Mobile and Paging 6
Special 6-digit service numbers that began with 92 (of the 92xxxx range) will then require a 092 prefix within Morocco e.g. 921234 becomes 092 921234.

Toll-free "green" numbers, universal access and "kiosk" numbers expand by adding the digit '0' in the middle - between the first and last four digits e.g. 08001234 becomes 0800 0 1234.
